Conceptual holes and layouts

There are a lot of possibilities in golf design. Even when the existing land is screaming for a certain concept, there are usually a few different smaller design moves that could be made to contribute to the value and interest of a hole. The better architects are the ones who can parse through the possibilities and implement the moves that will most benefit that hole as well as its place within the sequence of the golf course.

My 2016 Lido concept was an unusual par 5 that countered intuition and needed to be played from the green backward, depending on which side of the green's spine the hole is on. To get the best angle, the player needs to be on the same side of the sp… — My 2016 Lido concept was an unusual par 5 that countered intuition and needed to be played from the green backward, depending on which side of the green's spine the hole is on. To get the best angle, the player needs to be on the same side of the spine for their third shot, but to get to that spot, they need to be coming in from the opposite side of the fairway to keep the ball from kicking down to the center. Played correctly, the hole ends up playing about 30 yards longer.
